Music: Key Stage 4

NQF BTEC First Award in Music (Level 2)

During the course learners will learn to compose music for the media and for computer games, as well as learn about job roles and responsibilities and professional development within the Music Industry. All the coursework will be assessed and marked by St. Peter's School Music Department staff and successful learners will be awarded a Pass, Pass and Merit or Pass, Merit and Distinction for their work at the end of the course.

The NQF BTEC First Award in Music (Level 2) course consists of four units. Learners will study two units in Year 10, and two in Year 11.

In Year 10 learners will study Unit 7, ‘Introducing Musc Sequencing’ and Unit 2, ‘Managing A Music Product’.  In Year 11 they will study Unit 6, ‘Introducing Music Recording’ and Unit 1, 'The Music Industry’ for which they will sit an exam in January.

Learners will be given detailed written feedback on their work on a regular basis as well as audio teacher feedback through iPad management of the department.

All learners receive one-to-one guidance from Music Department staff during every lesson so that everyone feels secure in their learning.

Future Pathways

Upon completion of the BTEC Level 2 course, learners can study 'A' Level Music Technology in the 6th Form or study BTEC Music Technology at Level 3 in readiness for University entrance, apply for training courses at the BBC or other similar organisations or apply for jobs at music production companies that specialise in writing music for the media including computer games and the moving image.

Scheme of Assessment

The Scheme of Assessment consists of one tier covering the whole ability range. Grades G to A* are assessed.

The assessment consists of:

  1. A listening question paper
  2. Two coursework components – Performing and Composing

Differentiation

Differentiation in the listening examination will be achieved by setting questions which are designed to assess candidates at the appropriate levels of ability and which are intended to allow all candidates to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do.

Differentiation in coursework will be achieved by task and outcome.

Awarding of Grades

The listening examination paper will have weighting of 40% and the coursework a weighting of 60%.

Candidates’ marks for the listening examination paper will be combined with the marks for the coursework in the appropriate weightings to give their final total mark. This final mark will determine each candidates’  final grade.
